PARKER COUNTY(CBSDFW.COM) - Given hours to grab their valuables and secure their homes, residents in Horseshoe Bend headed for higher ground Wednesday night.
Continuous days of rain and releases from nearby lakes are pushing the Brazos River to its limits. Flooded banks are encroaching on homes.
"I'm probably staying. Me and my bat and my ignorance," said resident Joseph Smart.
Smart is packing his wife and kids up but sticking around fearing someone might loot their home.
"I wish he'd go with me. I don't want him to stay but I understand why he's doing it. But to me, we can replace that stuff. We can't replace him," said wife Kathy Smart.
And that's the fear Wednesday night for emergency crews. Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler says he's only seen the river this high a few times. He says it rarely ends well for the stubborn folks who won't leave.
"What's going to happen tonight, that's what I'm worried about," says Fowler. "And who stayed in here and didn't get out and what are we going to find tomorrow."
The Smarts only hope to find their home still in one piece and dry. And if it does get bad Wednesday night Joseph says his backup plan is his canoe.
"It's living on the river. You never know. Five minutes, five miles the weather is going to change, the water is going to rise. Just taking it as it comes."
