North Texans Taking Special Steps To Protect Packages

DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) -  In a world where "gotcha" video has become common place, surveillance video capturing crooks following delivery trucks to steal packages, still manages to amaze. It's happened all across the country — including North Texas.

"I thought, this is crazy!" exclaimed Sherry Dettle, from her North Dallas home. "They're following the trucks around and I just can't believe it."

After seeing video of the thefts on CBS 11 News, Dettle didn't stop at astonishment. She and her husband installed video cameras.

"That covers our whole doorway," she explained pointing to a camera overhead. "All the way out to the sidewalk, and portions of the front yard."

And with the holidays just around the corner, other customers, too, are hurrying to put 'peace of mind' on their shopping lists.

"They're calling us now because they anticipate the surge of packages being delivered," says Butch Davis.

According to Davis, president of Omni-Watch Systems, homeowners who have been considering purchasing home security systems are "getting off the fence," because unattended packages on the front porch are an easy target.

"It's a crime of opportunity," he said. "Thieves will be cruising neighborhoods now, knowing that. And they see something on the porch, they go grab it and run."

Davis says over time, technological improvements have made the systems smaller, better and much more affordable. And now, they also offer real-time monitoring.

"If you're concerned, you can pull this up on a laptop, phone, tablet -- whatever you want to do -- at work, and watch what's going on, all the time. If you choose to do that, it's there, 24/7."

Not only do the cameras help police catch crooks, Davis says the systems are also a deterrent.

Like many other North Texans, Dettle has found comfort in the Cloud. Laughing she said, "I paid for them, and I ordered them [packages], and they're supposed to go wherever they're supposed to go! I want them on my front porch!"
