New Bill May Save Keller Girl's Life
Rep. Michael Burgess, a Republican from Lewisville, introduced HR 1705, also called Kaitlyn's Law. It makes a small change clarification to the policy of TRICARE, the health service provider for military families, to allow horses to be used for physical therapy alongside benches, balance balls and boards.
The bill is inspired by Kaitlyn Samuels, a 16-year-old Keller girl who suffers from a brain disability, cerebral palsy and severe scoliosis. She stopped responding to therapy in a traditional setting but became actively involved when therapists used a horse.
TRICARE stopped paying for the therapy however, and required the family to pay back some money, when it learned about the horse.
The bill has already picked up bipartisan support including Rep. Marc Veasey of Fort Worth and Rep. Tom Cotton from Arkansas.
