Multi-Fatality Accident On West Loop 820 Kills Good Samaritan & Toddler
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Fort Worth police are investigating a deadly crash along West Loop 820 at Clifford Street.
Investigators say a 28-year-old mother lost control of her Pontiac and skidded across the freeway, hitting the concrete barrier at 1:20 a.m. Monday morning.
Police say she exited her car and was walking north bound on the left shoulder when another driver swerved to avoid hitting the Pontiac. Brent Moore, 37, tried to help the mother and her two kids, but then all of them were hit by an oncoming El Camino.
"I'm shaking," says Yolanda Garza who knows the mother and her children involved in the crash, "I was just down the street and was like 'I'm going to the house and pray to God it's not true.'"
Garza's friend remains in serious condition.
The family's 2 year old little boy, A.J. Mendoza, was killed.
The baby was rushed to the hospital. Brent Moore was also killed immediately.
He was on his way home from playing darts.
"He would give the shirt off his back," says Sandy Moore Brent's ex-wife "There is a lot of things that he's not going to see. There's weddings, there's children that they are going to have, there's graduation... there's prom's. He's got three daughters that he's not going to get to walk down the aisle."
His oldest son says it's been especially hard for him.
"What really took a toll on me when we went to the house where we were living at and I stepped in - knew he was gone and not coming back," says Koy Whiddon Moore's son "I keep waiting for him to come to the door and say I'm here and I know that's not going to happen. What are you doing? Why are you guys crying."
Police say the 22-year-old driver of the El Camino was taken to the hospital.
He has been released and is at home recovering.
A fund has been set up to collect donations for the Mendoza family.
