More Budget Debate Expected At State Capitol

AUSTIN (AP) - Texas lawmakers have more negotiations in store to try to reach a two-year state budget as the May 30 scheduled end of the regular legislative session looms.

Talks were expected to resume Thursday by House and Senate negotiators.

Action stalled Wednesday as Texas House leaders again postponed a revenue measure that they say will determine whether they can balance the two-year spending proposal. House and Senate negotiators grew frustrated over the bill being weighed down with more than 200 amendments.

Lawmakers have been working to craft a budget with a multibillion-dollar revenue shortfall. Negotiators have agreed on most of the plan, but are at a stalemate over education spending.

Gov. Rick Perry would choose the date for any 30-day special legislative session, if needed.
