Klay Thompson, Mavericks part ways after two seasons, team announces
Klay Thompson's stint with the Dallas Mavericks is over.
Brought in to team with Luka Doncic before Dallas abruptly and controversially traded him, Thompson and the Mavs have agreed to a buyout, ending his tenure after two seasons with the franchise.
Thompson originally arrived in Dallas via a six‑team trade on July 6, 2024.
"Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization," Mavericks President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri said. "We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward."
The veteran sharpshooter played 141 games – starting 80 – for the Mavericks, averaging 12.9 points while shooting 40.3% from the field and 38.7% from 3‑point range.
On Jan. 15, 2026, Thompson passed Damian Lillard for fourth all-time in NBA 3‑pointers made. Thompson currently has 2,899 career 3s, one of only five players with at least 2,800. He made 200‑plus 3s in each of his two Dallas seasons, giving him 11 total seasons with 200‑plus made 3s – one of only two players ever with 10‑plus such seasons.
Before arriving in Dallas, Thompson won four NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors – 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022 – and was a central figure in the Warriors' dynasty alongside Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and, later, Kevin Durant.
