Jurors Resume Horse Cloning Deliberations
AMARILLO (AP) - A Texas Panhandle federal jury is to continue deliberations for a third day in court challenge to the American Quarter Horse Association ban on cloned animals.
Deliberations began late Friday in Amarillo. Jurors reported themselves deadlocked on a verdict Monday afternoon, but a federal judge ordered deliberations to continue.
Two quarter horse breeders in 2012 sued the Amarillo-based AQHA, raising antitrust issues and challenging a ban on clone registration.
Association lawyers say a cloned horse doesn't come from a registered mother and father, which is one of its rules for listing. The association does register horses bred using other breeding technologies, however.
An AQHA attorney says the 280,000-member association has the right to set its own rules for issuing and maintaining pedigree records for American quarter horses.
