DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Hundreds of people crowded around a Dallas LGBT resource center Sunday night in a show of solidarity for the victims killed in the mass murder attack of an Orlando gay nightclub.
Many braved rain at the beginning of the event to attend, but all cheered when the rain broke and a rainbow broke out.
"Its amazing!" one of the speakers exclaimed as the crowd spontaneously broke into cheers and applause at the sight of the rainbow.
The initial meeting was boisterous.
"I want you to wake up!" LGBT activist C.D. Kirven yelled into the PA system. "I want you to pay attention and I want Orlando to hear our voices! Say we are family!"
"We are family," the crowd yelled.
"We are love!" Kirven hollered.
"We are love!" came the reply.
"We are NOT afraid!" the activist yelled even louder than before.
"We are NOT afraid!" came the reply.
After nearly an hour and a half of speeches from LGBT activists, religious and city leaders, the group walked nearly two miles to the Legacy of Love monument erected to honor people suffering from or who have died from AIDS. The group was much quieter and reverent. Many circled the monument placing candles, handwritten signs and flowers in respect to the dead and wounded.
