Heavy Storms Leave Thousands In The Dark
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Heavy rain, high winds and occasional lightning strikes brought some much welcome precipitation to the DFW area on Thursday night and Friday morning, but left behind flooded freeways and downed power lines that put tens of thousands of people in the dark.
Parts of the Airport Freeway in Bedford went underwater before 10:00 p.m. on Thursday as heavy runoff clogged drains in a construction zone.
With drought conditions the norm this summer, some areas reported more rain in 10 minutes than had fallen throughout the entire month of September.
Oncor reported more than 26,000 customers were without power around 1:30 a.m. -- the vast majority of those outages in Tarrant County. Crews were out in the field early Friday morning trying to restore power.
Despite the storms, there were no immediate reports of significant damage.
CBS 11 News meteorologist Larry Mowry said that the storms will continue through Friday afternoon and could dump as much as 10 inches of rain in the southern parts of North Texas.
