Girlfriend, Family Members Testify In Defense Of Eddie Ray Routh

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - On the first full day of defense witnesses in the trial of Eddie Ray Routh, his girlfriend- Jennifer Weed, his sister and brother in law testified before the court on Wednesday.

Routh's girlfriend talked about their rocky relationship. She told the Erath County jurors she had agreed to marry him the night before the murders but nearly broke up after a big fight the next morning.

Prosecution allege that Eddie Ray Routh was upset because of the break up.

Jennifer Weed testified that the two met on a dating website. She found him to be goofy and funny.

Routh, 25 is accused of killing American Sniper Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield. He faces life in prison, if convicted.

Earlier in the morning, Routh's brother-in-law and sister took the stand for the defense.

Gaines Blevins, Routh's brother- in- law testified that he came to their house in the evening of Feb 2, 2013 right after the murders.

Gaines said his hair stood on the back of his neck when Routh told him, "He said he had taken two souls before they could get me."

Laura Blevins testified that Routh was driving a truck. She asked him if he had traded his Volkswagen beetle, Routh told her, "I traded my soul." The truck belonged to Chris Kyle.

She told him, "I love you but I hate your demons."

She told the court that she recognized her little brother for just a moment when she said that. "But he switched back." Suggesting that Routh was himself only for a moment.

The judge dismissed the jury early today. The trial resumes tomorrow morning at 9am.
