Garrett Sounds Off On Tate Fine & Player Safety

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) - "We certainly had trust in the league that they were going to do the right thing," said Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett regarding the $21,000 fine that the NFL imposed on Seattle Seahawks reciever Golden Tate for the illegal hit on Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee.

"I was a little surprised during the game that it wasn't called, and something else was called on the sideline, but those things happen fast" the coach told 105.3 The Fan during his weekly radio show.

With the game changing over the years and evolving more towards player safety Garrett feels the rules help without changing the spirit of the game. And even in the heat of the moment, following a vicious hit Garrett said "You always talk to your players about having each others back, but at the same time you talk to them about poise and composure."

"Backing up your own guy is something that we want all of our players to do, but you want to do it within the confines of the game." Garrett said when asked about legal, on-field retaliation - or as RAGE co-host Greggo said "lighting the guy up."

"You don't want to get overly emotional and start doing thing that are going to hurt the team, but there's no question you have his (your teammate's) back and there are plenty of opportunities to do that in the ensuing plays."
