GARLAND (CBS11) - As Garland residents continue to clean-up what's left of their houses and neighborhoods and start to rebuild, there's a sight that surprises everyone.
Amid all the houses cut in half, blown apart, and toppled and snapped trees, there's one house along Lyons Road that barely received a scratch.
To 82-year-old Howard Myers and his son Paul, there's only one explanation: "God was looking out for us," said Paul Myers.
His father said, "That's the only reason we're still here. God was taking care of us."
On that Saturday night after Christmas, they ran to their bathroom to take cover.
Paul said, "Out of nowhere, that roaring sound that everyone tells you about, it's like it went from dead silent to it was right there."
After the tornado passed, they say they ran across the street to help their neighbors, then took a look at their house. "We knew immediately that we were really lucky," Paul said.
He said the tornado must have taken a sharp right turn to avoid their house and continue down their street.
"This is just stuff that can be replaced," says neighbor Johnnie Higgins.
Across the street, neighbors like Higgins were no where near as lucky, but still grateful they weren't hurt, and that the Myers' house escaped damage. "There's no doubt about it. God sheltered him. I don't have to thank God, I know that he did it."
In back of the Myers' house, the twister tore their neighbors' fence, and snapped trees.
But the only damage they had on their house was this dent on the garage.
Their tall trees, even the flowers went untouched.
Howard Myers remembers, "I said thank you God for helping me and watching out for me. He had to be because it had to be a miracle."
They couldn't wait to get to church Sunday morning.
