Freeze Warnings for Parts of North Texas...a Cool Weekend Ahead
Skies have begun to clear on a chilly, windy day in North Texas. The wind will remain pretty breezy this evening for all outdoor activities, including high school football games. Bundle up!
Winds will relax a little bit more overnight and with clear skies, temperatures should quickly drop off into the 30s for most of North Texas. However outlying areas and rural communities will find temperatures at or below 32° by the start of the day Saturday.
FREEZE WARNINGS are in effect for our far northwestern counties overnight tonight. This will be the first subfreezing night in these areas this season and will likely kill sensitive plants...so take precaution.
We're not expecting temperatures below freezing in the Metroplex itself. Although it will be close in some areas. You'll need to switch over to the heat inside your home tonight.
We could readings in the upper 20s in some areas well north and northwest of DFW!
We'll have plenty of sunshine Saturday and a lighter wind. So after a very cold start, it should be very nice by afternoon. Still temperatures will be below normal by 10-15 degrees.
Meanwhile Hurricane Sandy will continue to move north this weekend, just offshore the Southeastern U.S. It will bring a lot of wind and rain to Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. Computer models are still pulling Sandy west toward the Northeastern U.S. by Monday. Landfall still looks to be either Monday night or Tuesday morning...anywhere from the Mid-Atlantic to New England as a category one hurricane.
The impacts of this storm will be very large. The challenge for all levels are government will be getting residents and visitors to evacuate in a timely fashion along the coast. Voluntary evacuations are already underway from North Carolina to New Jersey in various communities. Numerous states have already declared states of emergency ahead of Sandy. Another challenge will be response in the aftermath. In general, there will be widespread wind damage, power outages, and flooding...the extent of all of this is not yet known. Depending on the exact landfall and angle at which Sandy comes ashore, the local impacts could be catastrophic. Once again, if you know anyone who lives in the Northeast or is visiting there...please let them know to follow the directives of emergency managers and government in this coming weather disaster.
Ironically while folks along the East Coast will have one of the worst weather weeks in their lifetimes, we will have a beautiful weather week here. Lots of sunshine and very mild temps expected. See the complete forecast starting today at 4p on CBS11.
