Fort Worth family mourns 15-year-old boy killed in drive-by shooting inside his bedroom
A Fort Worth family is grieving after a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed inside his own home early Thursday morning.
The teen's father says the bullets tore through the walls of their house on Glenbrook Lane around 1 a.m., striking his son as he talked on the phone with his girlfriend.
James Washington walked reporters through the path the gunfire took as it pierced the home.
He says his son, Prince Washington, had just gone to bed.
"A great kid. When I say a great kid – great. 'Yes, sir. No, sir. Yes, ma'am. No, ma'am.' Loved the Lord. Very respectful," Washington said.
Shot while talking to his girlfriend
Fort Worth police say Prince was in his bedroom when shots were fired from outside the home.
"He was on the telephone with his girlfriend when that happened," his father said.
Washington says Prince stumbled out of his room moments later.
"He came out of his room bleeding, saying, 'I've been hit.' He collapsed on the floor," Washington said.
Prince was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.
Neighbors describe terrifying gunfire
One neighbor said the shots were so loud and rapid that she thought someone was pounding on her door.
"I thought it was somebody knocking really fast… but it wasn't. Somebody got killed," she said.
A promising student and athlete
Prince was a student at South Hills High School and a standout basketball player. His father says he had big dreams and a bright future.
"This is something that he didn't deserve," Washington said.
