Fort Worth Rolls Out Bike Sharing Program
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The City of Fort Worth is rolling out 300 new sets of wheels on Monday morning, for a bike sharing program launching on Earth Day. The program is the first-of-its-kind in North Texas, and aims to both help the environment and promote healthier lifestyles across the city.
The program officially begins at 10:00 a.m. on Monday.
The concept is simple. Just head over to any one of the 28 bike sharing stations which have been built throughout downtown Fort Worth and across the urban core. Pick up a bike, ride where you want, and drop it back off at any station. Bikes include a basket on the front, in case any riders need to carry something along, and locks to keep them secured.
"It's a great opportunity to, say, if you're downtown at work and you want to go to, say, Magnolia Avenue to have lunch, you can hop on one of these bikes, go get your lunch, work your lunch off on your bike ride back to the office," said city councilman Joel Burns. "It really is a great setup."
Each bike is also equipped with GPS and identifying tags to help the city keep track of their whereabouts, should one go missing.
Those who wish to participate in the program can sign up for memberships of either one day, one month or one year. But there are also hourly rates. The first 30 minutes are free to ride. The second 30 minutes cost $1.50 and then it is $3.00 each hour afterwards. Bikes are available to riders every day, all day.
Burns said, "It really is a great way for anyone to hop on a bike, get a little exercise and go see Fort Worth."
