1 dead in Fort Worth police shooting on Highway 287

One person has died after a police shooting on Highway 287 Thursday evening, Fort Worth officials said.

Fort Worth Police Chief Eddie Garcia said at 4:03 p.m., an officer saw a person on the bridge of 287 and Maddox cutting himself on the neck. The officer went up the hill to try to help.

Garcia said that at that point, the officer said the man looked like he was attempting to jump off the bridge. The chief said multiple calls were also received reporting a man on the bridge cutting himself, who appeared to be attempting to jump.

Garcia said the officer, a 6-year veteran, gave the man commands, and the man ran towards the officer with what appeared to be a broken bottle that he had been using to cut himself. The officer fired, hitting the man. First aid was rendered until the paramedics arrived; however, at 4:28  p.m., the man was pronounced dead.

Highway 287 was closed until 7:29 p.m.

The chief said that no officers were injured and the investigation is ongoing.
