Fort Worth Mulls Fewer Lanes On Busy Road
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A controversial construction project will be front and center at the Fort Worth City Council on Tuesday. The so-called road-diet for Forest Park Boulevard could make the busy artery safer for cyclists. But not everyone is on board with the plan.
The proposal would reduce the number of lanes along Forest Park Boulevard. There are currently four lanes of traffic along the roadway, two in each direction. The idea being discussed would drop that number down to one lane in each direction, with a center turn lane and bike lanes along the two edges.
This new lane strategy has already been applied to other roads in Fort Worth.
Rebecca Raiden, a grandmother who crosses the busy road as she walks her grandkids to school, is in favor of the idea. "I think that the diet plan, while I know it will inconvenience people moving from south to north and north to south, it will certainly make it safer for the children and the pedestrians in this neighborhood. And since it is in this neighborhood that makes it priority."
Opponents of the plan are concerned that such changes would only increase traffic congestion in the area. The proposal will be discussed further on Tuesday at the city council meeting.
