FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The future of an iconic Fort Worth destination will be up for debate on Tuesday night as city council members vote on where to lay the boundary lines for historic preservation.

Both city leaders and preservationists agree that the Fort Worth Stockyards should be protected from development that could potentially alter the character of the area. But just how much of it should fall under that protection is what will be decided on Tuesday evening.

City leaders have said that they are working to preserve history while also balancing the interests of private property owners. However, the group Save Our Stockyards has concerns about the parking garages, office buildings, hotels and shopping center that could come with any new development.

The Stockyards represent living history and heritage for the City of Fort Worth. Last fall, the city council started designing a historic district with a promise to keep the iconic area's character in tact. This comes as a $175 million redevelopment project is on the way.

City council members drew up one set of boundary lines for historic preservation, but the Historic and Cultural Landmarks Commission broadened that area with their own set of lines. The separate boundaries represent two very different matters of opinion on this issue.

The vote is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night, and hundreds of people have planned to attend a Save Our Stockyards rally which begins an hour earlier.
