Fort Hood Soldier Dies In Afghanistan

A 20-year-old Fort Hood-based soldier has died of wounds suffered in an insurgent attack on his unit in Afghanistan.
A Defense Department statement released Monday says Pfc. Alexis V. Maldonado of Wichita Falls died Saturday at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire in the Zhari district of Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan.
He was assigned to the 510th Clearance Company, 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood. A Fort Hood statement says Maldonado had been in the Army as a combat engineer since October 2008 and deployed to Afghanistan since last December.
