Former Track Coach Sues Texas Alleging Discrimination

AUSTIN (AP) -- Former University of Texas women's track coach Bev Kearney has filed a $1 million lawsuit against the school alleging race and gender discrimination and retaliation.

Kearney attorney Derek Howard said the complaint was filed Thursday in Austin-based Travis County District Court. It seeks $1 million in damages.

Kearney, who is black, resigned Jan. 5, as Texas prepared to fire her for what it said was an inappropriate relationship with an athlete in 2002.

Texas later revealed that assistant football coach Major Applewhite, who is white, was allowed to keep his job after having an inappropriate relationship with a student trainer in 2008.

Kearney's suit also alleges that a university administrator had a relationship with a subordinate, but doesn't name the person.
