Fatal Crash Kills Teenager
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A 16-year-old driver was killed Monday evening in a crash on FM 156, south of Highway 114 in a portion of far north Fort Worth that rests in Denton County.
The driver of a Ford pickup truck lost control while traveling north, and crossed the center lane into oncoming traffic. A Ford Contour with two teenagers inside then struck the truck. That car's driver died at the scene, according to Sgt. Lonny Haschel, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. She was later identified as Katelyn ShyAnn Hooper of Haslet. Her family says she goes by the name ShyAnn.
A 16-year-old passenger in the Ford Contour, identified as Brianna Christensen of Haslet, was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth with serious injuries. The pickup truck driver, said to be 31-year-old April Seleska of Denton, was also taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Their current conditions are not known.
The crash is still under investigation.
It is also unknown if deteriorating weather conditions were a contributing factor to the fatal crash, Haschel said.
Both girls played basketball for Northwest High School. ShyAnn's family says she was coming home from a track and field tryout at the time of the crash. On social media, students are tweeting #SmilelikeShyann and #PrayforBrianna with supportive messages for the teens and their families. Classes are closed today due to icy weather conditions, but students are pledging to wear orange tomorrow to support the girls.
Northwest ISD released a statement saying that a counseling hotline has been set up for students who need to talk with someone. Counseling will also be available on campus tomorrow for students as they return to school.
"On behalf of the Northwest High School Lady Texan basketball program, we are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our players, ShyAnn Hooper and the condition of another player, Brianna Christensen," said Head Basketball Coach Rusty Johnson. "Shyann Hooper was loved by her teammates and school. She will be deeply missed and always remembered as a part of the Lady Texan basketball family. Our prayers go out to the families and friends of both young ladies, and we ask for continued prayers for the both families and Brianna's recovery."
