WEATHERFORD (CBSDFW.COM) - Marcy McIver fought back tears as she spoke about her son, 20-year-old Ed McIver Jr. and her husband accused in the shooting of Fort Worth police officer Matt Pearce.

"I am deeply and truly sorry."

Her husband was killed in the shootout with police; her son remains in jail on a $ 2 million dollar bond for attempted capitol murder and other charges.

"It wasn't supposed to be this way. He's a good kid and I'm sorry it happened to them and I hope for the best," said Mrs. McIver.

Fort Worth police said they're trying to determine if both men shot at Pearce, who is in critical condition and heavily sedated after a friend said he was shot seven times.

Detectives said both suspects had guns at the time of the shooting.

McIver Jr.'s grandfather, Ed McIver III said he believes his grandson wouldn't have fired shots at police.

"He's not a bad boy. He's good, but I can't justify what he's done if he's done it. All I want is to get to the truth. If his bullet hit the officer, then he'll have to face the music, but I don't want to see a capitol murder charge brought up on him if he didn't shoot the man."

Police were trying to serve felony warrants on the older McIver for aggravated assault deadly weapon and aggravated assault family violence when the incident happened.

His wife said he had served time in prison, and didn't want to return. "It made him cold, it made him angry all the time."

Doctors said they're encouraged that officer Pearce is an incredible fighter.

He has two young daughters and is surrounded by his wife and family in the intensive care unit.

Pearce continues to receive a lot of support from the community and from his fellow officers.

"It is out job to support the family and the community and be a conduit for the community to help support the family. We will be there for the family from this point on," said Richard Van Houten, President of the Fort Worth Police Officers Association.

For now, Marcy McIver said she is holding out hope for her son.

"...that he comes home, that he knows that this is not his fault because I don't think he did this."
