Expert: Have A Plan Next Time You Go To The Movies

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Bertha Brown says despite the deadly shooting at the Louisiana movie theater, she and her five grandchildren weren't going to stay away.
But she'd like to see increased security at theaters -- even metal detectors. "I feel that would prevent a lot of the things going on because they can detect whether you have any weapon."
Michele Howard, who took her children to the movies, strongly disagrees. "To me, that's a little extreme. I mean, where are you going to draw the line?"
Chris Grollnek, is an expert in active shooter events. "We teach people to react and escae and survive."
He was a police officer for 13 years, most of them in McKinney.
But he retired two and a half years ago after his left shoulder was badly injured while on-duty, and he is now considered surgically paralyzed.
He says people must develop a plan to get out of a theater safely in the event someone starts shooting.
"Get down, stay low, and move as fast as you can. Have your family with you. Have a rally point and if you separate and go different ways, it's harder to shoot a moving target than a stationary target."
Grollnek has developed videos on how to survive during an active shooter event and has placed them on his website activeshooterexpert.com.
A spokeswoman with Studio Movie Grill says after the deadly movie theater shooting in Colorado three years ago, they closely reviewed their security.
She says all of their theaters have highly trained officers.
I also called and emailed representatives from the Alamo Drafthouse, AMC, and Cinemark movie theater chains, but no one got back with me.
Grollnek says theaters may want to increase security, but shouldn't go overboard. "They don't necessarily need to bullet proof the whole theater, or put magnatometers at the front door. You don't want TSA checking you in to watch a movie, you want to be comfortable."
Michele Howard says "I guess the world we live in we may need to prepare for something like that. It'll be something great to talk to my husband and see what he thinks. I just don't want to be afraid living in this world."
Grollnek agrees people shouldn't be afraid and should continue going to the movies and enjoying life.
