Expect More Super Bowl Public Transportation Patrols

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - An army of federal law enforcement officers has arrived in North Texas. They're here to help local transit police patrol public transportation during Super Bowl week.

"We're always concerned," said Chief James Spiller, with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Police. "Terrorism, threats, it's something you live with daily. I think what's important here is all the steps we've taken this far."

Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response or VIPR teams are assembled for the week leading up to Super Bowl XLV. The teams will work with DART Police and other North Texas agencies to enhance security.

Behavior Detection Officers are a part of those teams. Those officers are trained in how to spot suspicious activity.

According to Dirshawn King, a Federal Air Marshal Supervisor for the VIPR team of Cincinnati Field Office, the behavior specialists are trained to spot the most subtle expressions and movements of a potential terrorist or a would-be troublemaker. "We're looking for any type of deviant behavior."

The VIPR teams will be deployed based on traffic flow and crowd conditions.

"We don't have any specific threat to the Super Bowl area but we're just here working to make sure all the modes of transportation are secure and the passengers are safe," explained King.

But keep in mind that officers can't be everywhere. So, they'd like your help.

The Department of Homeland Security has partnered with the NFL to bring the "If You See Something, Say Something" public awareness campaign to Super Bowl XLV.

The campaign not only includes print and video advertisements, but training for football employees to ensure that they and incoming fans have the tools needed to identify and report suspicious activities and threats.

If you see anything suspicious - call 9-1-1.
