ENNIS, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers are investigating the police shooting of a man in Ennis, who officers say drove toward them in his pickup truck after a pursuit.
Police in Ennis say the shooting occurred Saturday evening as they were responding to a call about a gunman threatening another driver.
Ennis Police Lt. Mike Hopson says when officers tried to stop him, he refused. He eventually lost control and hit a street sign. Police ordered the man to get out but he began driving toward them.
Several neighbors near the incident witness the ordeal as it was happening.
"I was getting ready to fix myself something to eat and all of a sudden I heard something. Bum bum bum! So I turned my light off and ducked down," says witness Alfred Myers.
Alfred Myers says his entire family ducked down -inside their home. He then went to his front porch.
"I saw the police with guns like this, on the guy, telling him to get out of the truck, get down or something and then I saw them move to the truck and pulled him out and laid him on the ground."
Ennis police say the man shot near an officer had a gun and was chasing another motorist and that victim called 911.
A number of people say the suspect was driving erratically through the down town area of Ennis.
"To me they should have stopped him because he was endangering other peoples lives," explains William Lopez.
Police say the suspect lost control of his pickup truck, collided into a sign and refused to stop.
Instead police say he accelerated toward the officers. One officer fired his weapon through the windshield, hitting the suspect.
Hopson says a loaded bolt-action rifle was found inside the man's truck. The gunman, whose name hasn't been released, is hospitalized in Dallas in critical condition and facing multiple charges.
No residents or police officers were injured during the incident.
