ROWLETT (CBSDFW.COM) — People in Rowlett revved their engines for a good cause today — while bringing together hundreds of car lovers and thousands of dollars for neighbors who need it most.

Taking care of your automobile takes a lot of love. Jodi Heggelund, with the North Texas Mustang Society and Car Club, wanted to channel that passion.

More than 300 vehicles lined the lots of Church in the City, where the beautiful cars starkly contrasted the vehicles that recently littered neighborhoods devastated by tornadoes.

"We've got Mustangs and Chevys, and old cars, new cars," Heggelund said. "Our motivation is to help those in need."

Rowlett residents have been recovering since the city was hit directly by a tornado on Dec. 26.

"We have a lot of participants who have come out, and we have a few vendors who have agreed to be here," Heggelund said, "all to just help the community and get everything back on its feet."

Every dollar raised went to the church, the community and the people. Organizers said the event raised more than $8,000.

"We have fun getting together and talking shop," Heggelund said, "but at the same time, we try to give back to the community."
