Drought Update for North Texas and When That Cold Front Get Here
UPDATE: Tied Record High at DFW Today
It's still coming! The cold front I have been talking about for what seems like weeks now (really just since last Friday) is still on track to get here Friday night! It will be noticeably cooler this weekend, finally!
TIED RECORD HIGH today. The high so far at DFW has been 103. This ties the record for this date set back in 1951.
Here is where that cold front is located as of 3pm Thursday. It is moving thru Nebraska and will approach the Red River by 5pm tomorrow.
There will be scattered showers and thunderstorms with the front as it passes thru North Texas Friday evening. Coverage will not be high, but there could be a few showers and storms that disrupt high school football games. If you are outside tomorrow evening you'll know when the front comes thru because winds will shift to the North and be gusty up to 30 mph. Temps will also drop into the 80s behind the front.
RECORD HIGHS TOMORROW BEFORE FRONT ARRIVES...
I am forecasting a high temperature tomorrow of 105! The record for tomorrow is 102 set back in 1963. It could get even hotter too if winds turn more out of the Southwest and west. This would add a downslope component to the air. This would be air coming down off the higher plains of west Texas. As air sinks it warms. So this warming could add a few more degrees to that high of 105. But that cold front arrives tomorrow evening.
COOLER AND BREEZY WEATHER FOR FRIDAY NIGHT...
Behind the front there still could be a few spotty showers and thunderstorms thru Friday night, but you'll notice breezy north winds and temps dropping down to about 70 degrees by Saturday morning. Sunday morning we will wake up with temperatures in the 60s and even 50s in the rural areas.
DROUGHT UPDATE...
The last drought numbers came out today. Not much change from last weeks update. But now 72% of the state is in a drought. That compared to 66% of the state back on June 6th. About 50% of North Texas remains in a drought. Here is a look at the drought monitor for North Texas.
