Drought Update and Holiday Weekend Forecast
HOT AND MOSTLY DRY…
Temperatures will stay pretty consistent for the next seven days with highs in the upper 90s an low 100s. Overnight lows will also stay in the mid to upper 70s over the next seven days as well. The only thing of note, is the small possibility of a few PM pop-up showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours on Saturday and Sunday and then again on Tuesday of next week.
Our big upper level high will move toward the Midwest over the weekend. This will allow for easterly winds in the upper levels of the atmosphere to move over North Texas. With the dominant high moving away, we may be able to squeeze out a few pop-up storms over the weekend. But coverage will be less than 10%. So you would be very luck to see any rain.
3rd HOTTEST JUNE ON RECORD…
As we wrap up the month of June, it appears that this will be the 3rd hottest June on Record. 86.7 has been the average temperature for the month. This is where you take the average of the high and low for each day. Of note, is that last year (2010) will now drop down to the fourth hottest June on record as this year overtakes it into the third spot.

DROUGHT WORSENS FOR TEXAS…
Here is a look at the latest US DROUGHT MONITOR for the state of Texas. Text continues below….
As you can see there is a big hole right over DFW up to the Red River where we are not considered to be in a drought. This is the only spot in the state that is not in a drought. The latest facts show 96% of the state is in a drought. 90% is in an Extreme Drought and 72% is in a Exceptional Drought which is the worst classification of drought. According to the John Nielsen-Gammon who is the Texas State Climatologist and a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University this is one of the worst droughts he has seen since records began in 1895. This drought compares to droughts seen in 1956 and 1918.
