DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – It didn't take long after the gunfire ended in downtown Dallas last Thursday for Heidi Smith, the now widow of Dallas Police Sgt. Michael Smith, to receive the call every officers' loved ones fear.
Smith said someone from DPD called to tell her that her husband had been shot.
She said it took her a moment to process the thought and her reaction was, "Something is really, really wrong."
Smith says police officers quickly arrived at her house to take her and her daughter to the hospital to be by her husband's side.
"I think they were just trying to get Caroline and I there to talk to him," said Heidi Smith.
By the time they arrived at the hospital the police sergeant was in surgery.
Family and loved ones waited to get word then smith said their worst fears were confirmed,
"They said we're very sorry, and that's the last thing that I remember," said Smith.
Sgt. Smith's youngest daughter, Caroline recalled the last conversation she had with her father earlier that day before he left for work.
"He said to me. What if this is the last time you ever kiss me or hug me… It just felt different to me," said Caroline Smith. "I felt something bad was going to happen."
Heidi Smith said, "Nothing is the same or feels like it will ever be the same."
The family says the only ounce of comfort they have been able find is in the overwhelming support they have received from their extended family in blue.
