DISD School Board Appoves Plan To Dismiss Principals, Teachers
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - When Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Dallas schools chief Mike Miles wanted to praise a growing education program, DISD chose Pinkston High school.
Three months later, Pinkston's principal has resigned after reportedly being added to a growing number of principals listed for firing or non-renewal.
By a vote of seven to two, the DISD school board approved a plan to dismiss two high school principals and 444 teachers at Thursday's night meeting. That's twice the number of average DISD teacher firings. Forty other principals received demotions or resigned.
Despite the push back from supporters of those educators, Superintendent Miles said there is support for his plan.
"They do want change. They do want the best outcomes for their kids. Sometimes I think some voices may grab all the attention, but if we look at the whole picture, we have a lot of community support," said Miles.
Beatrice Martinez, a community LULAC leader said, "We're not going to support Mike Miles blindly, but on this issue, it's long overdue."
Despite the non-renewals and demotions, each district employee can appeal the action taken against them and are entitled to a hearing before the school board.
