Disappearing Class Size Caps
Will class size caps go just to save some money next year? That's the fear of Texas Classroom Teachers Association Director Jerri Stone. "Class size caps are only applicable in grades K through 4 and when you're dealing with more than 22 kids who are in kindergarten through fourth grade you really do have issues with even being able to present a lesson." But she thinks lawmakers will at least consider eliminating the 22 to 1 student/teacher ratio in order to save both school districts and the state money. She says that's a bad idea. She says school districts can already get waivers from the state to bust the cap for a short term financial fix during the recession and that should be enough.
