NORTH RICHLAND HILLS (CBSDFW.COM) - Most people have not seen gas prices drop below $2.00 in nearly a decade, but gas stations across North Texas started rolling back the numbers at the pump on Thursday.

From Arlington and Dallas to Fort Worth and North Richland Hills -- drivers can easily get a gallon of regular unleaded gas for just $1.99.

DFW saw this price for the first time last Friday, at Fuel City in Dallas. But that was a special promotional price for only one weekend. This time, the prices are expected to stick around.

According to AAA Texas, the statewide average price is $2.26 per gallon. The national average price is $2.48 per gallon. These are both down 14 cents from last week, and nearly 25 percent from the start of the year.

Drivers are welcoming this good news right before the holidays, with travel about to begin and last-minute gifts waiting to be purchased.

Gas prices soared above $2.00 in the spring of 2005, and dipped slightly below $2.00 in some places back in December 2008, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. But, just before that dip, the prices reached a national average of $3.98 per gallon, an all-time high.
