Decoding Teens Texting & Sexting Lingo

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - LOL could mean "lots of luck" when it comes to figuring out a teen's texts. And what you don't know could make your jaw drop.
Katie Greer, an online safety expert, says the shortcuts teens use to text have taken on a life of their own, "I think it's fairly common and it's def something parents need to be aware of." Says Greer, the shorthand can now be "Asking for sex, asking for naked pictures. And in the process of the conversation.. my parents came in they're using quick symbols for those as well."
So what are some of these codes?
Here are some relatively tame ones.
PIR means parent in room.
POS means parent over shoulder.
KOTL means kiss on the lips.
LMIRL means let's meet in real life.
We took a tame list to one Dallas mom, her 11-year old son and 19-year old neighbor. They couldn't come up with one. Leslie Sorrels, the mom, says she's glad she took the test, just to see what's out there. "The parents don't know what they mean so. If they see it in a text, they're not going to know what it is. Which is the purpose."
After the quiz, we showed a full list to Sorrels. Among the abbeviations?
TDTM or talk dirty to me.
53X stands for sex.
8 is oral sex.
IPN means I'm posting naked.
GNOC is get naked on camera.
Sorrels says, "I'm thankful I have never seen any of it on my phone but i think young people are going to be faced with it a lot."
Greer has this advice for parents. Check in with your kids every day about that they are texting. Says Greer," I do think the red flags are when we see a couple of these and we say hmm, what does this mean? Is this a reference to me being right here. Why don't you want me to see this text message?"
And if that doesn't get though to them.. try texting them: CD9 and 9.
That means parents are around and watching.
