Dallas Police Honor Detective Cuffed To Oswald
DALLAS (AP) - The man in the cowboy hat handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald when he was shot by Jack Ruby has received the police commendation award.
The award was presented Tuesday morning during a ceremony for retired Dallas police Detective Jim Leavelle. Police Chief David Brown says the detective of the year award will be named in Leavelle's honor.
Leavelle, now 92, joined the Dallas police force in April 1950. He was among the lead detectives assigned to investigate the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the slaying of Officer J.D. Tippit.
A photo of the moment when Ruby shot the accused presidential assassin Oswald won the Pulitzer Prize. The 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination in downtown Dallas is in November.
