Dallas Alcohol Sales Campaign Kicks Off With a New Name
The group that wants to eliminate dry areas in Dallas inaugurated its campaign Wednesday with a new name. Keep-the-Dollars-in-Dallas has four months until the November 4th election to convince voters to eliminate dry areas in Dallas so that alcohol sales will be permitted city-wide. Currently, a large swath of northern Dallas and most of the city's southern half are dry. The group formerly known as Progress Dallas is a consortium of people and businesses standing to profit from additional alcohol sales, including restaurants, grocers, wholesale clubs and real estate developers. The group changed its name because City Hall estimates that, if the measure passes, Dallas would see more than five-and-a-half million dollars in additional alcohol sales taxes in the first year and double that the next year. Proponents throw out even higher figures approaching 30-million a year in new revenues.
