HOUSTON (CBS11) - Both Texas Senator Ted Cruz and retired neurosurgeon, Ben Carson told the 1,200 Republicans at the Lincoln-Reagan Day Dinner, too much is at stake this election.

Cruz was welcomed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who endorsed him.

Wednesday night, Cruz said Texas will have a major impact on the Republican primary this year because 155 delegates are up for grabs on Super Tuesday.

"If we nominate a candidate who will not be faithful to defending the Constitution, we risk losing our rights for a generation, and let me tell you, Texans have always led the way," said Cruz.

In all, nearly 600 delegates will be awarded in 12 states.  That's about half needed for the nomination.

Carson spoke about reducing the nation's debt more than $19 trillion.

"When someone like Bernie Sanders comes along and says 'free college for everyone', then the appropriate response is to laugh hysterically and recognize that you are about to go off the fiscal cliff," says Carson.

After Thursday night's debate, Cruz will campaign in Tennessee, Virginia, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

On Monday, he'll be in Dallas, San Antonio and Houston.

Carson will be in Irving Saturday.

On Friday, Sen. Marco Rubio will campaign in Dallas and Donald Trump will be in Fort Worth.
