Corinth Residents Protest Proposed Buc-ee's
CORINTH, Texas (CBS 11 NEWS) - Buc-ee's is one of the most popular pit-stops in Texas, but some residents in Corinth say they don't want one in their neighborhood.
Buc-ee's is hoping to build a store on 18 acres along I-35E at Corinth Parkway which will have 96 gas pumps.
"I'm not happy at all. It's going to be a lot of traffic, a lot of nuisances going on," said Patricia Marziotto, who lives in the neighborhood adjacent to the proposed site.
Residents like her say they are concerned about bright lighting and about the traffic that the popular gas station could attract.
With the widening project on I-35E, the site has become prime real estate in the eyes of developers.
The town of Corinth stands to make close to $72,000 in property taxes alone, should the project be approved, according to Guy Brown, executive director of the Economic Development Corporation for Corinth.
"Plus, we get 2% of whatever sales tax they generate. Under their incentive plan, they want a portion of that back and that's what we've got to consider and take up tonight," Brown said.
A consultant will share a cost benefit analysis at a public hearing at 6 p.m., Monday.
Dozens of speakers are also expected to speak at the public hearing.
Some neighbors, like Ronaldo Roy, said Buc-ee's reputation for cleanliness and paying higher wages makes it a good choice for the town.
"Buc-ee's has history. I think from a development standpoint and tax revenue, you can't ask for a better customer or client," Roy said.
Brown said Buc-ee's is working hard to appease residents to create a buffer between their site and the neighborhood, in hopes the project will get the green light.
The Economic Development Corporation will decide whether to recommend the project to city council.
City council will have the final say on the project and will vote on August 14th.
Should the project be approved, Buc-ee's could break ground as soon as January 2015.
