Coppell Three-Year-Old Pinned Beneath Family's Vehicle

COPPELL (CBSDFW.COM) - A three-year old boy became pinned under the family's vehicle on Tuesday evening when the car began rolling backwards in the driveway.

When Coppell Police arrived, the child was "breathing, conscious, and coherently speaking with first responders," according to a city news release. The Coppell Fire Department gathered the proper equipment, lifted the vehicle, and extracted the child from beneath the car.

The child was transported by CareFlite air ambulance to Children's Medical Center of Dallas, where he received treatment for his injuries. The health status of the child has not been made available.

The mother indicated to police that, after returning from shopping, she parked the vehicle in the driveway of her home. As her son was helping unload groceries from the trunk, the unoccupied car began rolling backwards towards the alleyway. The child was struck and trapped beneath the car as it continued to roll. It doesn't appear that the child was struck by the vehicle's tires, but he may have been injured by the undercarriage.

The mother told police that she thought she had put the vehicle in park and is uncertain why it began to roll.

No further investigation is expected in the incident.
