LEWISVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - A community is mourning the loss of a 12-year-old boy who was killed in a bizarre incident on Friday evening in Lewisville. Eric Lozano was a seventh-grader, and would have turned 13 years old in December.
According to authorities, a father was teaching his unlicensed 16-year-old daughter some basic driving skills when she proceeded to lose control of the vehicle. The teenage girl allegedly put the car in reverse and accelerated rapidly out of the driveway, crossing the road and backing into Lozano, pinning him against a nearby home.
The incident also left a 10-year-old child with minor injuries.
"I didn't believe it would end like this," said Luis Alvarez, the victim's friend. "It's hard for us, his friends, especially the ones who saw everything."
Lozano's school prepared other children for the news by sending out an email over the weekend and having care counselors available on Monday.
A memorial filled with teddy bears, balloons and letters now marks the spot where Lozano was killed. His family said that he was passionate about skateboarding, football, girls, school and family.
No charges have been filed so far against the teen driver. The father was not actually in the vehicle at the time of the crash. "It's too early to discuss any charges that we may or may not file," said Capt. Dan Rochelle with the Lewisville Police Department. "We'd like to finish our investigation first and make that decision. Certainly we'll consult our district attorney's office."
Lozano's aunt said that legal action should be taken. "There's been nothing, and something has to be done, legally," said Erica Mendez. "The child should not have been behind the wheel getting taught how to drive in a neighborhood where there's kids everywhere, running around and playing."
Meanwhile, the boy's mother is in the hospital suffering from exhaustion and fatigue.
