Cold Morning Ahead

We had a cold front sweep across n. Texas in the early morning hours. Just compare the temperatures just after midnight to the temperatures at 4pm:

We had some decent rains in scattered places. Officially it was only a trace of rain at the DFW airport. With more rain unlikely as we close out the year (there is a small chance on Wednesday night) it means this goes down as the 13th driest year on record at DFW. Four years of drought continue.

Across the morning a band of snow set-up over Wichita Falls, it brought a mix of precipitation over our northwest counties (Jack, Young, Montague, Stephens were under a Winter Advisory for most of the day). This is what Wichita Falls looked like this afternoon (from Twitter @TxWxChaserByran)

Almost 5" of snow was reported just over the Red River in Lawton. The clouds started to break apart at the end of the day as the rain left. Tonight temperatures will get down to freezing in the metro area, in the 20's just to the north and west of the Metroplex:

We won't have as much wind tomorrow, mostly sunny skies should warm us to about 50°:

A south wind on Monday will get us into the upper 50's. The last warm day of the year:

We look up to the Canadian Border and we see VERY cold air getting ready to spill into the United States:

That 60° weather of Christmas and the day after is gone for the year as the bulk of that arctic air is in place over north Texas by Tuesday and Wednesday:

We are watching an upper-air storm system swing in from the southwest. Jeff Jamison was talking about this last night. If it comes in quickly we get our first significant winter weather of the season just we start the New Year. If it moves in slower we get some sleet/mix Thursday morning before it changes over to just rain. Amounts will be light so its unlikely to have significant effects on the main roads but could be a problem on the bridges. Right now I believe it comes in slower.

Here is your extended forecast. Stay posted, it could change for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day:
