Child Killed In North Dallas Shooting

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - One child is dead and another one is injured following a shooting at a North Dallas apartment complex. The incident happened Thursday afternoon at the Spanish Point Apartments, located within the 4000 block of Harvest Hill Road, near the intersection of LBJ Freeway and Midway Road.

According to authorities, the shooting took place inside of an apartment unit, where four kids were playing. Neighbors said that children frequently gathered and played at this particular apartment unit after school. The gunshot was heard by neighbors outside.

When police first arrived on the scene Thursday, they were under the impression that a man had entered the apartment unit and shot an 8-year-old boy in front of his three friends. After further investigation, police have now determined that the 8-year-old victim and a 6-year-old boy were both shot while the four children were playing with a shotgun.

The 8-year-old who died has been identified as Keiveon Johnson. The 6-year-old, who was struck in the leg by pellets from the blast, has not been identified. He was treated and released in good condition.

Police are now investigating the incident, to determine if any charges will be filed in relation to the children gaining access to the shotgun, and if the children were unsupervised at the time of the shooting.
