Busch Looking To Bounce Back At Bristol

BRISTOL, TN (Sports Network) - After a disappointing 38th-place finish last week at his home town track in Las Vegas, Kyle Busch is looking to rebound at Bristol Motor Speedway, a track where he has had a tremendous amount of success in the past years.

Busch led in points prior to Las Vegas, but dropped to 14th in the rankings after he left there.

Last August at Bristol, Busch became the first driver to win all three of NASCAR's national touring series races on the same week.

"It was pretty cool, because when you come so close and then don't get it, it's pretty frustrating," Busch said. "In 2009 [at Bristol], we won the truck race and we were leading the Nationwide race and we got crashed out, and then we ended up winning the Cup race. So, it was probably a year delayed."

Busch almost accomplished the feat again last month in Phoenix. He won the Camping World Truck and Nationwide Series races before finishing second to Jeff Gordon in the Sprint Cup Series event there.

He has four Sprint Cup wins at Bristol, including victories in three of the last four races here.

"I'm not exactly sure what makes me so good at Bristol," he said. "I've just had a lot of success there, but I've also had some misfortune there too. Ever since I got through my [Sprint Cup] rookie year, I've just taken a liking to the place. Of course, I've been able to get some help from my brother. He's always been really good there."

Kyle's older brother, Kurt, is a five-time race winner at Bristol, but he has not won there in five years.

Kurt Busch currently shares the points lead with Tony Stewart. Carl Edwards, who won at Las Vegas, and Juan Pablo Montoya trail the leaders by seven points.

While college basketball is in the midst of "March Madness" this week, Bristol is expected to have its share of madness too, with 500 laps of beating and banging on the 0.533-mile, high-banked short track.

"Bristol has already been on my mind a little bit," said Edwards, who won the fall race at Bristol in 2007 and '08. "That's going to be a wild race. It always is."

The spring race at Bristol is the first of six short-track events on the Sprint Cup schedule.

Jimmie Johnson won at Bristol for the first time one year ago. The five-time defending series champion also claimed his 50th career victory.

In last year's race here, Johnson put on four new tires, while most of the other leaders only took two fresh ones. He ran in the sixth spot for the final restart with 10 laps to go, but charged past Stewart for the lead four laps later.

Johnson has scored nine top-10 finishes in 18 starts at Bristol.

"I'm looking forward to going back," Johnson said. "We're sitting decent in the points, but a good run at Bristol would move us in the right direction in points."

He is currently 12th in points (-26).

Bristol is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Jack Smith won the inaugural race here in 1961.

Forty-four teams are on the preliminary entry list for the Jeff Byrd 500.
