DALLAS (CBS11) - A sign of respect toward police was diminished to a pile of trash in Oak Cliff after someone tore down symbols meant to honor the officers killed and injured in the downtown ambush.
Tiffany Serrano joined neighbors in hanging blue ribbons in their neighborhood to "back the blue."
But on Tuesday night, they realized someone for the second time had torn down the ribbon and left them in a pile.
"It made me physically sick," said Serrano. "To me that's hatred of what the blue ribbon supports. It's backing the blue."
Serrano thought the first time might have been a fluke or that the ribbons were accidentally removed.
But after finding nearly 50 of the torn-up ribbons on Tuesday night, she now feels someone is trying to send a message.
"This isn't falling off by itself. It's human hands grabbing it and tearing," said Serrano.
The Dallas Police Department released a statement regarding the incident:
"We are truly appreciative of the support shown by residents in this neighborhood and the entire city and beyond... This type of mischief will not diminish that support, but instead strengthen our relationship."
Serrano said whoever is ripping down the ribbons needs to know she has plenty of blue ribbons and determination.
"If all of them are town down tonight, I'll go back out and put them back out again," said Serrano.
