Before Evening Rain North Texans Clean Up Storm Damage
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Light rain showers are expected late Tuesday night, but they won't be anything like what blew across North Texas on Monday.
Tuesday afternoon workers were busy repairing damage done to homes by the high winds and lightning strikes.
Badly needed rain drenched North Texas Monday, but the lightning that came along with it sparked several fires.
CBS 11 News viewer Matt Riddle sent a cell phone video of a home on Sugar Maple in Arlington. Just minutes after lightning hit there was a small fire in the attic of the house.
Neighbor Melanie Johnson came home to find fire trucks lining the street. "It was crazy," she said. "It was like, where the lightning struck it was a bubble. The shingles [on the roof] were sticking up like two feet. It was crazy."
Some people say lightning doesn't strike the same place twice, but for Johnson this was close enough. "It's so scary! His pool right here got struck last fall."
Johnson's house is in between the two homes that were struck by lightning.
Restoration crews and contractors across North Texas spent the day recovering what they could and making repairs.
Two firefighters were injured in a fall at a house in Fort Worth that was also struck by lightning. The men, who are both still hospitalized, were caught inside when the attic collapsed.
Officials say damage to that home will be well over $200,000.
Meantime, contractors like Royce Martin say this is a busy time of year for them. "I start watching the news and I start calling all my guys and we start getting geared up to be out all night."
