ALLEN (CBSDFW.COM) - Dr. Scott Niven has been selected as the sole finalist for the Allen Independent School District's open superintendent position. School board trustees picked Niven during a meeting on Monday. The board will again vote on a contract to hire Niven on November 28.

State law requires a school district to wait 21 days between naming a sole finalist and officially hiring a new superintendent. A search firm helped the school board screen applicants and conduct interviews throughout September and October.

"The board is very excited to welcome Dr. Niven and his family to Allen," board president Louise Master said in a news release Tuesday. "He is a respected educator and his relationship-building skills, as well as his innovative ideas and energetic nature, will be a great fit for Allen!"

Niven comes to Allen from Red Oak, where he has been the school district's superintendent for nine years. Prior to that, Niven served as superintendent within the Liberty-Eylau ISD near Texarkana. He has also filled other roles in the Texarkana ISD, as well as teaching at Texas High School in Texarkana.

Before teaching, Niven was a senior staff accountant with Thomas & Thomas Certified Public Accountants for six years. Niven received his undergraduate degree in business administration and accounting from the University of Arkansas - Fayetteville, his masters of education in 2003 from Texas A&M University - Texarkana, and his doctorate of education in 2012 from Texas A&M University - Commerce.

Niven and his wife have three children, ages 23, 21 and 10.

The new superintendent replaces Dr. Lance Hindt, who left for the Katy ISD back in August. Former Allen ISD superintendent Dr. Jenny Preston has been serving as interim superintendent in the meantime.
