118,000 Texans Use Federal Website For Health Care
AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — More than 118,500 Texans have used the federal health care web site to sign up for insurance.
The federal Department of Health and Human Services released statistics Monday that show Texas ranked fourth in the nation behind California, Florida and New York. California and New York are operating their own health care exchanges and did not suffer the same problems as the federally-operated HealthCare.gov. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius visited Dallas just last month.
More than 50-percent of the people who have signed up are between the ages of 45 and 64. Almost 75 percent of people who signed up received a federal subsidy to help pay for their insurance.
Another 154,000 people have filed applications, but have not chosen a plan yet.
Texas has the highest rate of uninsured in the country, about 24 percent -- that's compared to the national average of about 15 percent.
