Pentagon puts 8,500 troops on heightened alert to deploy if requested by NATO

The number of troops sent to the eastern flank could increase tenfold if Russia launches a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to a Pentagon official.
State Department also allowing non-emergency personnel to leave Kyiv amid Russia's military buildup on the borders, but Ukraine and some other U.S. allies say it's "premature."
An array of lethal and non-lethal weapons systems have been approved to give Ukraine the means to defend itself.
U.S. officials warned Tuesday that Russia could launch an attack at any point.
These are believed to be the first religious exemptions granted to any service members, out of over 13,000 military requests.
The Army has not yet initiated separations for soldiers refusing the vaccine but expects further guidance later this month.
The cost of responding to this crisis so far is "well over $250 million," according to the deputy commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
The dozens of sentences imposed thus far range from probation to over 5 years in prison.
The news comes about one year after some military members participated in the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
At least 81 of the more than 700 individuals accused of participating in the Capitol attack are current or former service members.
The Air Force has discharged 27 service members.
The investigation, conducted by Lieutenant General Sami Said, the Air Force inspector general, found no violation of law, negligence, or dereliction of duty.
U.S. intelligence is warning that Russia could invade Ukraine as early as January, a U.S. official confirmed to CBS News last week.
The bill had bipartisan support, garnering 364 votes.
