Record number of Americans die from COVID in 1 week

Hospitals across the nation are reaching their breaking point as the coronavirus pandemic worsens. For the first time, the U.S. has now reported more than 19,000 deaths from the virus in a single week. CBS News correspondent Lilia Luciano and CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook have the latest on the pandemic. Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, then joins CBSN's Lana Zak for his take on the health crisis.

Hospitals in California are struggling to deal with a surge in COVID-19 patients. Meanwhile, the U.S. government is announcing new deals for more vaccine doses and therapeutics. And researchers in South Africa and the United Kingdom are scrambling to learn more about new virus variants discovered in those countries. Former COVID data scientist sues over search warrant

Rebekah Jones was one of the people who helped create Florida's coronavirus dashboard. She was fired from her position in May after she says she refused to manipulate COVID-19 data. On December 7, her home was raided by officers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) after a cyberbreach that sent messages to current health department employees. Jones joins CBSN's Lana Zak to discuss the lawsuit she has filed against the FDLE and why she says they violated her constitutional rights.
