McDonald's employees help woman at drive-thru

Sheriff's deputies say a man followed a woman inside a McDonald's in Northern California and ordered her to leave with him. Employees became concerned when the woman pulled up to the drive-thru, and mouthed the words "help me" to one of the workers. The employees used their emergency training, and held up the drive-thru line until police could arrive.

Truck bomb kills at least 76 in Mogadishu

A truck bomb killed at least 76 people and injured at least 50 others in Somalia's capital Mogadishu. The blast happened at a busy security checkpoint during the morning rush hour, sending a plume of thick black smoke across the city. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, although a group with ties to al-Qaeda often carries out such attacks. A government spokesman called the blast one of the deadliest in Mogadishu in recent memory.

Astronaut Christina Koch now holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman. Koch blasted off to the International Space Station 289 days ago. But her milestone is about much more than just the duration of her time way from Earth.

Police investigate Houston shooting

At least two people are dead and six others were injured in a shooting near Houston, Texas, that police describe as an ""ambush."" The incident happened in the parking lot of a warehouse complex where a music video was being filmed. The sheriff said the suspects suddenly appeared on the scene in cars and on foot, opened fire and then fled. Police are trying to determine a motive for the attack, and the suspects remain at large.

Seven dead in Hawaii helicopter crash

The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to investigate the deadly crash of a tour helicopter in Hawaii. All seven people on board were killed. So far, only the remains of six have been found. On Friday, the fire chief said the weather and the terrain have complicated search efforts.

Former radio host Don Imus dies

Don Imus gained both fame and notoriety for his news-making interviews, edgy comedy bits, drug and alcohol problems, long-running feud with radio host Howard Stern, and his charity work for kids with cancer. In 2007, Imus faced public outrage and was fired by CBS after making racist comments. Health problems forced him to retire in 2018 after nearly 50 years on the air. Don Imus was 79 years old.

230,000 people flee latest Syria fighting

The refugee crisis is growing tonight in Syria. More than two months after President Trump proclaimed the U.S. mission in Syria effectively over, Syrian and Russian forces are pounding rebel-held Idlib Province. The U.N. says 235,000 people have fled their home there just this month. Charlie D’Agata reports.

School surprises bus driver with new car and raise

You can see why someone might hate being a school bus driver: the early hours when the weather sours and the abundance of responsibility combined with the absence of eyes in the back of your head. Nevertheless, as we first reported last May, Curtis Jenkins loves delivering these little ones to Lake Highlands elementary in Dallas, Texas. This holiday season, the school thanked him back. CDC reports high flu activity in 25 states

The CDC reports that Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, New York City and 25 states now have "high” flu activity. Flu cases have jumped by more than a million in just one week to an estimated 4 and half million cases, and more than 2,000 people have died from the flu so far this season.

A powerful winter storm is expected to impact millions of Americans as it dumps snow, ice, and rain across the country this weekend. Warnings were posted for almost 2,000 miles from Arizona to the Great Lakes as the storm rumbles east. At least 12 people were killed in a plane crash in the central Asian country of Kazakhstan. The aircraft, which had 93 passengers and five crew members onboard, slammed into a two-story building shortly after takeoff. Actor from Peloton ad gifts bike in real life

Many people did not like the way a Peloton ad showed a man giving his wife the exercise bike for the holidays. But, now, the actor who played the husband, Sean Hunter, is turning his role into reality. He gave his real girlfriend a Peloton for Christmas and posted a photo of them on Instagram, saying, "Here's hoping this goes over better the second time."

Suit says IL sterilizing plant caused cancer

A lawsuit, filed on Thursday, is drawing new attention to a cancer-causing chemical called ethylene oxide. It's used to sterilize about half of all U.S. medical equipment. Tessa Majors murder suspect released

New York City police say a 14-year-old, suspected in the murder of college student Tessa Majors, is free for now after questioning. Majors was stabbed to death in a park near Barnard College earlier this month. Police say the 14-year-old had been missing for nearly a week after running off before he could be interviewed. Mola Lenghi reports.
