Sandra Day O'Connor was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, and she retired in 2006.
Prior to making history as the first woman ever to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, Sandra Day O'Connor got her start in the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office in 1952 when she agreed to work without pay.
